<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately obtain an amount of sulfur stored in an NO<SB>X</SB>absorbent. <P>SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control device of an internal combustion engine includes the NO<SB>X</SB>absorbent in an engine exhaust passage. The exhaust emission control device detects input NO<SB>X</SB>concentration based on an engine operating state, detects an exit NO<SB>X</SB>concentration by an NO<SB>X</SB>sensor disposed downstream of the NO<SB>X</SB>absorbent, and calculates the NO<SB>X</SB>purification rate EFF of the NO<SB>X</SB>absorbent from these input NO<SB>X</SB>concentration and exit NO<SB>X</SB>concentration. The exhaust emission control device calculates a plurality of times the NO<SB>X</SB>purification rate EFF separately at a time interval, and decides a linear expression m representing a relation between a fuel consumption rate QF and the NO<SB>X</SB>purification rate EFF. When judged to have to conduct an SO<SB>X</SB>treatment for reducing a stored SO<SB>X</SB>rate in the NO<SB>X</SB>absorbent, the NO<SB>X</SB>purification rate EFF at this time is calculated by using the linear expression m. The relation between the NO<SB>X</SB>purification rate EFF and the stored SO<SB>X</SB>rate is previously obtained, and the stored SOX rate is calculated from the calculated NO<SB>X</SB>purification rate EFF by using the linear expression. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
