<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a state where the tension of a belt is kept high by operation of a locking means when the belt tension is released by a motor 15. <P>SOLUTION: The seat belt device comprises a reel 5 for taking up a seat belt 3, a motor 15 for controlling the belt tension of the seat belt 3 by rotating the reel 5, a locking means (lock gear 37, locking claw 59) that allows rotation of the reel 5 in a normal time and operates if necessary to prevent the rotation of the reel 5 in the belt drawing direction, and a locking operation restricting means for restricting the locking operation of the locking means in controlling the belt tension by the motor 15.
