PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately control a belt speed while preventing the consumption of a sensor used for detecting the belt speed. SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer belt 10 is rotatably stretched between a drive roller 9 and two follower rollers 15 and 16. Also, a scale 5 having a large number of marks is formed over the entire circumference of the intermediate transfer belt 10. A control device 70 controls so that the control of the correction of the belt speed based upon information obtained by reading the scale 5 with the sensor 6 is executed only for an image formation period.
