Gas-phase partial oxidation of an organic compound by passing a mixture of the compound, oxygen and an inert diluent gas through a bed of catalyst at elevated temperature comprises counteracting deactivation of the catalyst by increasing the gas pressure without altering the gas hourly space velocity. An independent claim is also included for apparatus comprising an oxidation reactor and a pressure-regulating device downstream of the reactor's outlet.
