A liquid crystal display device displays a color image while switching between a first drive method in which the light source extinguishing timing coincides with the data scan end timing and a second drive method in which the light source extinguishing timing does not coincide with the data scan end timing. When the response time from the transparent state to the shading state of the liquid crystal is sufficiently short, the first drive method is used for color display and the light emission time of the light source is reduced to reduce the power consumption. On the other hand, when the response time from the transparent state to the shading state of the liquid crystal has become long, the second drive method is used for color display and the light source extinguishing timing considering the liquid crystal response is set in so as to suppress display irregularities from the upstream to the downstream of the data scan. Thus, it is possible to suppress the display irregularities and reduce power consumption.
