PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a temperature control method for a fixing device, for reducing the overshoot and drop-down with respect to a target temperature expected in performing temperature control of a fixing roller by using a contactless temperature sensor and bringing the temperature of the fixing roller near to a true desired temperature. SOLUTION: The temperature of the fixing pressure roller is detected when powered on or printing termination and four stages of the target temperature are set according to the detected temperature. The temperature control is performed for the prescribed time from when powered on or printing termination based on the first target temperature and thereafter the target temperature is switched and the temperature control is performed for the prescribed time based on the next target temperature stepwise to change the target temperature at each time. The temperature is set at the desired target temperature at the point when the prescribed time elapses from the final time of the power source on or printing termination and thereafter the temperature control is performed based on the desired target temperature.
