PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling an interlayer distance of a liquid crystal phase which permits the control of the interlayer distance of a smectic liquid crystal phase at an arbitrary distance. SOLUTION: The method comprises selecting at least two arbitrary polymers having a weight-average molecular weight different from each other from the group consisting of a plurality kinds of polymers each having a different weight-average molecular weight and mixing the selected polymers in an appropriate mixing ratio so that the smectic liquid crystal phase has the desired interlayer distance.
