PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a halogen-substituted aromatic compound, in which a halogenation reaction solvent comprising a relatively inexpensive quaternary ammonium salt type ionic liquid having high environmental adaptability and safety is used. SOLUTION: This method for producing the halogen-substituted aromatic compound, comprising halogenating an aromatic compound having at least one electron-donating group directly introduced into the aromatic ring with an N-halosuccinimide, is characterized by performing the halogenation reaction in an aliphatic quaternary ammonium salt type ionic liquid.
