PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photochromic material( compound ) whose reversible change between colored state and not colored state is quickly responsive to light or heat. SOLUTION: The photochromic material is a cyclohexadiene compound represented by the formula(I)[ wherein, R<SB>1</SB>is a functional group; n is an integer of 0 or 1-4; when n≥2, R<SB>1</SB>s may be the same as or different from each other or may be joined each other to form a ring; R<SB>2</SB>is a (substituted) vinyl, (substituted) ethynyl, aromatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic heterocyclic group; R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>4</SB>are each a (heteroatom-containing) hydrocarbon group or heterocyclic group and may be joined each other to form a ring; and ring A is a (heteroatom-containing)≥4-membered alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon skeleton or heterocyclic skeleton ].
