PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a styrene copolymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution and useful for various moldings, additives for the moldings, various information recording materials, various coating materials and the like. SOLUTION: The styrene copolymer satisfying items shown below and a method for preparing the styrene copolymer by radical polymerization of styrene and other unsaturated monomers in the presence of a compound obtained from a stable nitroxide-based radical compound and a radical polymerization initiator are provided: (1) weight-average molecular weight in terms of polystyrene and measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) is 3,000-100,000; (2) a ratio of the weight-average molecular weight to the number-average molecular weight in terms of polystyrene as measured by GPC is 1.1-1.3; and (3) 30-99 mol% styrene and styrene derivative and 1-70 mol% one or more kinds of other unsaturated monomers are contained.
