1,191,225. Chain drives. E. EGLI. 11 Sept., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967], No. 43148/68. Heading F2Q. A link chain comprises dumb-bell shaped links 3, Fig. 2, each end portion 4 of which has a surface defining part of a sphere smaller than a hemisphere, and hollow drive elements 7 having spherical interior and exterior surfaces, each element having two cup-shaped portions (5, 6), Fig. 3 (not shown), and a pair of axially aligned openings (9) of a diameter substantially greater than that of the bar of a link and each element containing the two end portions of adjacent links which can move universally about its centre. The link chain engages sprockets having mating part-spherical recesses. The elements which may have a tongue and groove engagement may be held together by a shrunk on or press-fit ring (10), Fig. 4 (not shown), or by retaining rings (11), Fig. 5 (not shown), or by a coil spring (14), Fig. 6 (not shown), or by a pair of spring clips (22), Fig. 11 (not shown). Alternatively the element portions may be held together by welding, soldering or an adhesive or may be made of a self-lubricating polymer plastics material. |
