A process for the improved hydrometallurgical processing of manganese containing materials, the process characterised by the formation of a leach solution or slurry of manganese dioxide containing feedstock and acidic solution, passing a volume of sulphur dioxide gas through the leach solution whereby the levels of dithionate ion generated in the pregnant leach solution are less than about 5g/l, and subsequently passing the pregnant leach solution to a solvent extraction step.
