<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composting method comprising piling a compost material such as livestock feces and sludge, aerating the piled compost material layer by suction from its bottom, recovering the sucked drain and ammonia to reduce the volatilization of malodors, and utilizing the recovered ammonia as a solid fertilizer. <P>SOLUTION: The composting apparatus provided comprises a suction pipe 4 provided on the bottom of the piled compost material layer 3, a first drain trap 6 of which its inlet side is connected to the end of the suction side of the suction pipe 4 and its outlet side is connected to the inlet side of an ammonia trap 8, a second drain trap 10 of which its inlet side is connected to the outlet side of the ammonia trap 8 and its outlet side is connected to the suction side of a suction fan 12, and the suction fan 12 that discharges the remaining gas from the outlet side of the second drain trap 10.
