PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein an SN ratio of a reading signal of a servo signal and an SN ratio of a data signal are enhanced even though the magnetic recording medium has a thin magnetic layer suitable for high density recording. SOLUTION: The magnetic layer of a magnetic tape MT1 possesses a servo band SB1 in which a servo signal SS1 for controlling tracking of a magnetic head H is written and a data band DB1 in which data are recorded. The servo signal SS1 is magnetized and written on the servo band SB1 having been magnetized in one direction of the track direction thereof in the direction other than the one direction. The thickness of the magnetic layer is specified to be 10 to 180 nm and variation [(standard deviation of Mrt)÷(an average value of Mrt)×100] of the product [Mrt] of the residual magnetization and the thickness of the magnetic layer is specified to be not more than 30% in the track direction of the magnetic layer.
