Na and K alkyl xanthates (esp. C1-4) are made by adding NaOH or KOH to a mixture of CS2 and the appropriate alcohol in an inert solvent (preferably benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes or technical xylole) or 15-45 C, pref. 25-30C. The molar ratio, CS2, alcohol alkali hydroxide should lie between 1:1:1 and 1:1.2:1.2, pref. 1:1:1.05 and the quantity of solvent should be 1-5 times the wt. of the CS2, preferably 1.5-2.5 times.
|
