1,151,646. Measuring linear movement. METROMATION Inc. 22 Aug., 1967 [24 Aug., 1966], No. 38532/67. Heading G4H. Apparatus for measuring the linear movement of, e.g. a machine tool includes an elongated member, e.g. a cord or tape 30 (Fig. 1), which is wrapped around a wheel 22 in a housing 10, one end of it being attached to the machine tool, so that as the cord or tape 30 is moved with the machine tool the wheel 22 rotates, electrical signals being generated by a converter 12 mechanically coupled to the wheel 22 and being fed to a display 18 which may comprise Nixie tubes. In one embodiment the wheel 22 comprises an exactly round central element to which are connected two larger side discs which retain the cord or tape on the periphery of the central element. Alternatively, the wheel may comprise a two-part drum and a rim, the parts of the drum being screwed together. Adjustment of the screws results in distortion of the drum so that the rim takes on the degree of the roundness required for critical calibration. The apparatus may be kept at a temperature higher than that normally encountered by the machine tool so that the diameter of the wheel is not affected by varying temperatures. |
