[Also in Division G4] A document bearing human-readable symbols has corresponding simplified bar-code symbols applied to it. Printed symbols on documents are sensed by a mosaic of photo-cells for recognition purposes, the recognition apparatus controlling printing of a bar code on the document for each symbol to control a subsequent document sorter. The document sorter may optically sense bar codes printed in two different colours simultaneously and separately and to the exclusion of irrelevant markings by use of optical filters and a dichroic lens. Printing of bar code.-A stream of fluorescent ink is projected through a fine nozzle 107 from a pipe 104 subjected to oscillation magnetostrictively 105 (or piezoelectrically) so that the stream breaks up into separate droplets. The droplets are then electrically charged 109 by selective amounts so that electrostatic deflection plates 110, 111 deflect them as they fall under gravity on to the document 100 which is moving skew to the direction of the field from the deflection plates. Uncharged droplets fall undeflected into a waste trough 112. In this way a series of bars is recorded, each parallel to the width of the document If printing is done in two colours the above printing arrangements are provided twice, once for each colour. Feeding of documents is done using stack magazine feeders and endless moving belts between which the documents are gripped, vacuum drums being provided at the symbol and code sensing stations.
