A method of producing a laminate comprises applying a lamina of heat curable polyester material to a surface of a substrate, e.g. plywood, in which substrate there are present plugs of a heat-curable polyester material and applying heat and pressure to the resultant assembly. An apparatus for effecting the method comprises in combination a drilling machine 15 to drill holes in a substrate, a plug-inserter device 21 to insert heat-curable polyester material in the holes, means, e.g. rollers 63 to apply a lamina of heat-curable polyester material to a surface of the substrate and means, e.g. heated press 43 to apply heat and pressure to the lamina and substrate to bond them together. In a preferred embodiment, a lamina 53 is bonded to each surface of a plywood substrate 11. The heat-curable polyester material is preferably a composition of an ethylenically unsaturated cross-linking agent, e.g. styrene or vinyl toluene, a thickening agent, e.g. a mixture of calcium oxide with calcium hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide and a polyester derived from an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, e.g. fumaric or maleic acid, and a diol, e.g. ethylene, propylene, diethylene or polypropylene glycol, 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4- butanediol, 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol, 1,4- cyclohexane dimethanol or adducts or reaction products of allylene oxides with bis-phenol A. The polyesters may also contain residues of saturated aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. adipic, succinic, phthalic or isophthalic acid or tetrachlorophthalic anhydride. |
