A telecommunications network for providing wireless communications, comprising: a switching center configured to provide a voice communication link to a mobile station; and a base station configured to convey character data to a first mobile station, said character data comprising an identifier identifying the character data as a ringing tone transmission, and said character data further comprising data playable to form a ringing tone.
