<p>Gaseous silicon monoxide is reacted with steam, opt. containing H, and other gases, at above 1500 degrees C and reaction product is subjected to rapid quenching, pref. to below 400 degrees C by passing gas (mixture) directly over reaction zone. Product is white and liberates H2 from cold water. It retains its reducing properties for prolonged period. X-ray analysis indicates presence only of amorphous silica. It can be used as reinforcing filler for rubber and plastics and as thickener for oils, lacquers etc.</p> |
