PURPOSE: Provided are an esterification method which uses a halogenated catalyst having high selectivity, an esterification system using the method, an ester prepared by the method, and a downstream product produced from the ester. CONSTITUTION: The esterification method uses a sulfonated and halogenated thermally stable catalyst treated with a base, and the catalyst comprises a styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer, a styrene-divinyl benzene/ethyl vinyl benzene copolymer or their mixtures. Preferably the catalyst is surface sulfonated and/or acid regenerated. Preferably the reaction is carried out at a temperature of 60-200 deg.C and is used to prepare an acetate ester, an acrylic ester, a natural fatty acid ester, a sorbitol-derived ester, a phthalate and/or a benzoate and a maleic anhydride-derived ester.
