PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily adjust the white balance of a projected image even after switching the state where color reproduction is regarded as important and a state where luminance is regarded as important. SOLUTION: The illuminator is constituted so that a filter unit 28 is assembled in a light division optical system 23. Thus, the projected image in a high luminance state and the image in a high color reproduction state are switched and displayed on a screen. By making a filter member 28a retreat from an optical path, light source light having sufficient luminance is guided to the optical paths for G light and B light, so that sufficient illumination luminance is secured. Meanwhile, in the case of inserting the filter member 28a on the optical path, the relative intensity ratio of the G light and the B light is adjusted by a 1st filter FL1, and boundary light confounded into the optical paths for the G light and the B light can be cut by a 2nd filter FL2.
