PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method capable of improving the detection of the type of an optical storage medium or other necessary information.

SOLUTION: Optically detectable marks 210 readable by a wide range of optical systems are included in the optical storage medium 100. Among other uses, the marks 210 may be used to determine the type of the optical storage medium 100 in an optical device 400 capable of reading multiple types of the optical storage media 100.
