PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal transmission system and method capable of efficiently transmitting a digital video signal in three primary colors by using a single cable and to provide a transmitter and a receiver to be used in the system. SOLUTION: In this video signal transmission system, a transmitting side converts the digital video signals into serial video signals by time division multiplexing, generates header data in the period of a frequency division block signal obtained by dividing the frequency of a reference clock signal of the digital video signal, synchronizes the transmission signal composed of block series obtained by making the header data and a prescribed amount of serial video data to be one block in this order with a transmitting side system clock signal and transmits the resultant signal, and a receiving side receives the transmission signal transmitted through the cable. In addition, the serial video data in the received transmission signal is divided into each of the three primary colors on the basis of detection of the header data in the received transmission signal, a reproduction reference clock signal is generated, and the data for each of the three primary colors is outputted as a digital video signal in synchronization with the reproduction reference clock signal.
