The harvesting machine has conveyor rollers (21-24) with a metal detector (1) linked to a personal computer control, to bring the machine rapidly to rest before the metal body damages the cutting mechanism (25). After the stoppage, the feed conveyor rollers are reversed until the foreign body passes through the detection zone again or has left it. The reverse action is operated until the upper conveyor roller (22) at maximum has carried the foreign body to the highest point of its circumference.
