PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color separation and composite optical system which is capable of obtaining a display picture having a high contrast ratio and an excellent chromaticity without being influenced by the variation of wavelength-selective characteristic of a laminated phase difference filter and can be used for a picture display device and the like having a reflection type spatial optical modulation element. SOLUTION: The color separation and composite optical system is constituted so that, when a third color component beam G is P-polarization in a first polarization beam splitter, the wavelength band in which a fourth wavelength selective polarization transforming filter 11 rotates the plane of polarization by 90°is wider than the wavelength band in which a first wavelength selective polarization transforming filter 1 rotates the plane of polarization by 90°in a visible ray band.
