PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in a case where images are formed before the start of a paper feed operation in order to secure printing productivity, an engine control part cannot judge whether a paper feed request which the engine control part has received is a paper feed request for recovery that corresponds to paper exhaustion or a paper feed request for an image following the image that corresponds to a sheet issued with inappropriate timing. SOLUTION: When paper runs out after an image formation request 812 for the first page, information 813 about paper exhaustion is transmitted from the engine control part 702 to a sequence control part 701. In this case, for the subsequent image formation request 822, a notice 823 about cancellation due to the paper exhaustion is returned to the sequence control part. When receiving the notice 823 on the cancellation due to the paper exhaustion, then specifying another tray and performing a recovery printing, the sequence control part 701 indicates the recovery and transmits data on paper feed request 830. The engine control part 702 which has received the request returns an ACK (paper feed request) response according to the request. However, in a case where the engine control part 702 receives a paper feed request 803 with no indication of recovery in the same circumstance, the engine control part 702 makes a paper feed NG response.
