PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a more easy and sure method and apparatus for measuring a blood vessel diameter, by which effect of variation of a blood vessel diameter by cardiac beat can be avoided by a simple construction to reduce a load on the subject by ischemia, to more stably and surely fix an echo probe on a measurement location, and to set a direction of an ultrasonic emitting face. SOLUTION: Upon imaging an echo image of the upper arm artery of an examinee to measure a diameter of the upper arm artery based on the echo image, an echo image along a plane substantially orthogonally crossing the center line of the upper arm artery is imaged. The blood essel center on the echo image of the upper arm artery displayed on an x-y coordinates is calculated. Polar coordinate conversion is carried out making the blood vessel center the origin. A blood vessel edge is detected based on the echo image of the polar coordinate. An average diameter of the upper arm artery is calculated based on the detected data of the edge.
