PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an open shield construction method for reducing friction resistance of left and right side wall boards and natural ground to reduce thrust and improve construction property when letting an open shield machine advance and to provide the open shield machine used in this method. SOLUTION: In this open shield construction method, a process in which sediment in the front of the open shield machine 1 is digged/discharged through a front face or upper face opening of the machine 1, a process in which the shield machine is made to advance by elongating a drilling jack and using a concrete case body 4 as reaction force, and a process in which a new concrete case body 4 is lowered from above and is set behind the drilling jack contracted in a tail part 1c of the shield machine are adequately repeated to bury the concrete case bodies 4 sequentially in a vertical row. An outer side of a cutting edge 11 at a tip is digged in advance to form a clearance between a side face part of the shield machine and natural ground and pour a skid 16 into the clearance, thereby reducing friction resistance when the shiled machine advances.
