PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for discriminating an optical disk. SOLUTION: The method and the device are provided for discriminating an optical disk in an optical disk system for recording/reproducing a plurality of recordable disks having different track pitches. Thus, while a disk type is discriminated for the first time after the start of existing focus control or tracking control, the disk type is discriminated at an initial discrimination stage for moving an objective lens up and down to shorten a disk discriminating time. By changing the direction of the objective lens after a certain time with a point of time for detecting a signal necessary for disk discrimination set as a reference, quicker disk type discrimination is enabled, the performance of the optical disk system is improved.
