PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics with reduced drop-outs, excels in traveling durability and excels in moldability and stability with lapse of time as well. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a lower layer including nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder and a binder in this order on a nonmagnetic base, in which the N/Fe of the magnetic layer measured by a fluorescent X-ray system is 0.5 to 1.9 wt% and the magnetic layer has 20 to 100 pieces/100μm<SP>2</SP>of depression a depth 5 to 10 mm on its surface and more preferably the N/Fe of the lower layer is 0.5 to 1.2 wt%.
