The headrest (10) has a plate-shaped carrier component supported above the backrest of an automobile passenger seat via a pair of support rods (80,82) and a second plate-shaped carrier component displaced between a position in which it lies at the same height as the first plate-shaped carrier component adjacent the latter and a position in which it is spaced from the first plate-shaped carrier component in the vehicle longitudinal direction and raised relative to the first plate-shaped carrier component. The second plate-shaped carrier element is spring biased for movement into the second position upon release of a locking element securing it in the first position, with automatic locking in the second position by a spring-loaded blocking element.
