PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely and promptly activate a backup system of a steer-by-wire type steering device for a vehicle and to reduce the size of the system. SOLUTION: In the steering device 10 for the vehicle, in accordance with steering quantity of a steering handle 21, power for steering is generated from an actuator 38 for steering. The power for steering is transmitted to a steering mechanism 30 mechanically separated from the steering handle 21, and steering of steering wheels 35, 35 is performed by the steering mechanism 30. A shaft coupling 52, which is connected by a connection signal Cn, connects a steering shaft 22 provided for the steering handle 21 to an input shaft 31 provided for the steering mechanism 30. The shaft coupling 52 comprises a first joint half provided for the steering shaft 22, a second joint half provided for the input shaft 31, a connection member for switching the first and second halves to a connected state, and a working air generating means for generating working air pressure to connect the connection member when the connection signal Cn is received.
