In the production of p-methoxyacetophenone (I) by reacting anisole (II) and acetyl chloride (III) in the presence of aluminum chloride (IV), the reaction mixture used consists of or contains (II), (III), (IV) and toluene (V). INDEPENDENT CLAIM are also included for the following: (1) use of (V) as diluent for a suspension containing (II), (III) and (IV); (2) use of (V) as agent for increasing the yield and/or selectivity of the reaction of (II) and (III) in the presence of (IV) to (I) and/or for suppressing decomposition of the resultant (I) under the conditions for reaction of (II) and (III); (3) reaction mixture for producing (I), comprising (II), (III), (IV) and (V).
