According to the inventive method, the following phases are carried out during the same cylinder-operating cycle: an exhaust opening phase (OE-OF), a first intake opening phase (OA1-FA1), a second intake opening phase (OA2-FA2), a fuel injection phase (OI-FI) and a combustion phase. The time for exhaust closure (FE) occurs between the time for the first intake opening (OA1) and the time for the second intake opening (OA2). An internal combustion engine having a cylinder operating according said method and a motor vehicle provided with such an engine are also disclosed.
