PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which acquires image data not including an excessive area by reading a reading medium after automatically setting an image reading area in a simple configuration. SOLUTION: A data reader 1 is provided with a first conveyance path P1 for conveying a check S (or a check L) being a first image reading medium, and a second conveyance path P2 for conveying a card C being a second image reading medium. Furthermore, the data reader 1 is disposed along a common part (intermediary conveyance path M) of the first conveyance path P1 and the second conveyance path P2, and is provided with image reading parts (11, 12) for reading the check S or card C and a CPU 50 for setting an effective pixel area (image reading area) according to each of the check S and card C. The image reading parts (11, 12), generates two-dimensional image data by reading the check S or card C, according to the effective pixel area set by the CPU 50. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
