A cutter element for a rolling cone bit is disclosed having a cutting surface presenting a generally wedge-shaped top profile and, preferably, a wedge-shaped side profile so as to enhance formation removal by allowing a relatively sharp leading edge of the insert to penetrate deeply into the formation before the wider, trailing portion acts on the formation.
