PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the adsorption loss caused by moisture generating in combustion of a combustion gas or existing in the atmosphere. SOLUTION: This invention is applied to a method for manufacturing a glass particulate deposit, comprising a cleaning process for cleaning the surface of a core rod 1, used as a core or as a portion of each of the core and clad of an optical fiber, by polishing the surface of the core rod 1 and a process for depositing glass particulates, being converted into the clad of the optical fiber, on the periphery of the core rod cleaned in the cleaning process. In the cleaning process, the surface of the core rod 1 is cleaned by polishing the surface of the core rod 1 by irradiating it with a laser by using a laser oscillator 3. Thereby, it becomes possible to clean the surface of the core rod in a short period of time without using H<SB>2</SB>/O<SB>2</SB>flame containing a large amount of OH group, and also to prevent the entering of the OH group contained in the atmosphere into the surface of the core rod.
