PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a neutron image detector, very excellent in 500 microns≥position resolution and in position uniformity of neutron sensitivity. SOLUTION: A helium-3 gas detector is constituted so that helium-3 gas is sealed in a pressure-resistive chamber coolable to low temperature, and protons (p) or tritons (T) discharged, when a helium-3 capture a neutron, is detected with a low-temperature particle detecting element arranged in the pressure-resistive chamber to detect neutrons. The operating temperature is set at 3.19K or higher and 100K or lower, and the detector is operated in a pressure condition that the sealed helium-3 gas pressure is 0.36 times or higher than the operating temperature (units:K) to realize high helium-3 density state. In this manner, the range of protons produced by neutron capture reaction is reduced, and a neutron image detector having high position resolution for neutron detection is obtained.
