1,240,025. Dimerizing olefins. SUN OIL CO. 25 July, 1969 [25 July, 1968], No. 37421/69. Addition to 1,215,772. Heading C5E. Olefins are dimerized with a catalyst system comprising (1) a co-ordination complex of Ni(II) having any of the formulµ and (2) a Lewis acid of the group KAlX<SP>1</SP> 2 , R 3 AlX<SP>1</SP> 3 and R 2 AlX<SP>1</SP>, wherein X=Cl, Br or I, X<SP>1</SP> = Cl or Br and R=C 1 -C 30 hydrocarbyl, the process comprising: (a) pre-forming the catalyst by dissolving (1) and (2) in a small volume of mono- or dihalogenated benzenoid hydrocarbon at 0-150‹ C. and such that the Al : Ni atomic ratio is greater than 2 :1; (b) mixing the so-formed catalyst with a large volume of hydrocarbon solvent; and (c) contacting the olefin with the resulting catalyst solution at -100‹ to 200‹ C. to effect dimerization. The hydrocarbon in step (b) is preferably the olefin monomer. Olefins or cycloolefins may be dimerized or co-dimerized but the examples describe the dimerization of propylene.
