Preparations (A) for the prophylaxis and therapy of stress states or functional and organic nervous system or metabolic disorders contain glycine (I). ACTIVITY : Tranquilizer; Cerebroprotective; Vulnerary; Antialcoholic; Hypnotic; Nootropic; Antidepressant; Neuroprotective; Antiinflammatory; Antiaddictive; Gynecological: Vasotropic; Metabolic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Glycinergic receptor inhibitor; neurotransmitter; synaptic signal transfer mediator; regulator of intrinsic chloride channels in the bone-marrow and cortex; N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor modulator; toxin binder. In particular (I) acts as co-transmitter for the excitatory NMDA receptors, such that external supply of (I) has a beneficial effect on NMDA receptors, specifically in normalizing the balance between excited and inhibited neurone transmission.
