The device includes a permanently rotating main draw means (5) and outside of this a speed-synchronised side feed device (11) which seizes the wood lengths from a predetermined length with a lower friction force value and then with an upper friction force value only during the sorting cycle. With wood up to a length limit the inertia rotation remains solely under the action of the main draw means whilst longer wood is only seized by the lateral feed during the sorting cycle and is prevented from turning about its vertical axis.
