PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To individually evaluate the time characteristic of laser emission, the spatial characteristic of irradiation and the light receiving characteristic of a light receiving part arranged in an optical pickup head. SOLUTION: Outgoing light from an optical pickup 2 is made incident on a diffraction grating 9, sharing interference fringes formed by light projected from the diffraction grating 9 are received, the optical intensity of the received interference fringes is measured, and the focused position of the outgoing light from the diffraction grating 9 and the optical pickup 2 is controlled in accordance with the measured optical intensity to evaluate an irradiating position. While modulating a signal for controlling the outgoing light from the optical pickup 2, the outgoing light is received and the time characteristics of outputs from the optical pickup 2 are evaluated from the controlling signal and the received signal.
