[Also in Division G3] Apparatus for coiling spring wire includes a single, narrow, freely rotatable, axially-displaceable guide roller 6 which controls the pitch as the wire 1 is wound on to a pin 2. The guide roller 6 is moved axially by either an hydraulic cylinder 7 with control valves, or with a proportionating pump or by a lead screw and is braked by means of a coupled hydraulic pump 8 or an electric eddy-current brake to produce the required tension in the wire. In one embodiment the guide roller 6 is variably inclined using double pistons 9 which tilts the guide roller through a desired angle α. The guide roller 6 is controlled by electronic digital processing and measuring apparatus which comprises a data carrier containing data representative of the pitch of the spring, and an electronic store arranged to hold data specifying all parameters of the spring and controlled by timing signals from a pulse transmitter arranged to operate in dependence on the angle of the rotating pin to feed control signals to a control member for the guide roller via a translator and an amplifier. |
