PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a transparent base for an external gel preparation, containing a liposoluble essential oil component in a larger amount than the usual. SOLUTION: This base for the external gel preparation is formed by mixing (A) a liposoluble essential oil in an amount of 0.1-0.5 wt%, (B) hydroxypropyl cellulose in an amount of 2-5 wt%, (C) a lower alcohol in an amount of 45-80 wt%, and (D) water in an amount of 15-50 wt%. Bergamot oil, lavender oil, pine oil, rose otto oil, winter green oil, citronella, tea tree, peppermint, lemon, lemon grass, lemon eucalyptus, and rosemary camphor are each exemplified as the liposoluble essential oil.
