PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormality detection device for an elevator capable of automatically and certainly detecting the fact and also simply and easily installing the device therefor when parts required for operation of the elevator are dropped off by vibration and the midway of a rope connected to an elevator car is caught to an instrument in a hoistway (for example, a guide rail support fitting and a landing device) when the vibration by earthquake and strong wind is applied to the elevator car, and an abnormality detection method for an elevator. SOLUTION: The abnormality detection device for the elevator is constituted by a radio tag 4 mounted to a member of the elevator or the part 3 which may displace such as drop off by vibration by earthquake and strong wind; and a reading device 5 for capturing an electric wave transmitted from the radio tag 4.
