An improved coating for a golf ball has a micro structure of not more than one micron and prevents accumulation of dirt, especially in play between tee off and the green when ball cleaning is not permitted. The layer has particulate inclusions of hydrophobic or hydrophilic material. The protective layer can be applied to completed balls or is applied during manufacture.
