PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device and its method in which relation between a file and a group can be described, versatility in application is high, treatment of much files and group information is made easy. SOLUTION: A recording medium is randomly accessible and the recording and reproducing device records data and contents control information of the data in the recording medium or reproduces data from the recording medium. When contents of group control information for making arbitrary data a group independently of a file system and control information are changed, contents of a play list indicating its data reproduction procedure are changed.
