PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material labeled with a dye usable for its detection. SOLUTION: This method for labeling a component in an aqueous liquid includes (a) adding to the liquid containing the component a luminescent dye selected from the group consisting of cyanine, merocyanine and styryl dyes containing at least one sulfonic acid or sulfonate group attached to an aromatic nucleus, which dye is reactive with the component, and (b) reacting the dye and the component so that the dye labels the component.
