An exhalation device for a respiratory mask comprises a canister having a valve seat 18 against which is biassed a resilient valve member 20, a spring 38 exerting an additional force on the valve member, and a releasing mechanism consisting of a cord 36 secured at one end to a cup 40 supporting the spring and at the other end to a member movable on the canister. In a first position of the movable member, the cord is slack (Fig. 7, not shown) and the mask is suitable for use with a high pressure gas supply, and in a second position the cord exerts a pulling force on the cup 40 to prevent the spring acting on the valve member, so that the mask is suitable (Fig. 1) for use at atmospheric pressure with the user inhaling through a filter cartridge (not shown). The movable member may be a control ring 48 mounted on the outside of the cover (Fig. 1-3), a member slidable on the outside of the top face of the cover (Figs. 4-7, not shown) or a pivotable lever (Fig. 9, not shown).
